For a few, the first match of the season. For most, a match to forget. It was Saturday 20th September. The day of open day and the U13 rugby teams were keen to show parents what their child might enjoy in a first taste of Hamptonsports.
Hampton kicked off and they started well, making their tackles, hitting their rucks and running hard lines. It was about 15 minutes before RGS broke the deadlock and they led 5-0. The match was nearing half time, before Edward Robinson who was playing on the right-wing despite normally being in the centres, broke through and scored to make the match even at half time. 5-5.
RGS kicked off to begin the second half, and instantly, Hampton was under pressure, and it didn’t take long for RGS to restore their lead through big hits on Hampton’s line. 10-5. From then, things went downhill for Hampton. Tackle after tackle was missed as RGS ran through us, to their delight and Hampton’sdismay. 25-5. Hampton’s coach, Mr Studt, brought his team together for a quick talk between plays. They seemed like a side who believed they could get back into the match, and Hampton appeared to be getting back into the match, but they had nothing to show for it. However, RGS scored again, and this time, Hampton had no response as the next 10 or so minutes passed, and RGS had run in another 4 tries. The final scoreline was 50-5. A result which didn’t show for large parts of the match.
