Entertaining match gives U12Bs their first rugby win of the season

By Rey Jaiswal

Jogging onto the 3G pitches, I gritted my teeth and clenched my fists as I set my eyes on the match ahead. This battle was against Caterham School in the later part of Friday afternoon. The rugby U12B team hadn’t won a proper match yet, so we were determined to make it the first.

After lessons, I rushed down to the changing rooms, excited for the game ahead. Speedily, I threw on my games kit and headed down to the rugby pitches. I joined my team to warm up and stretch in order to play the best I possibly could in the match. Before we knew it, we were lining up in our formation with the first whistle only seconds away. Adrenaline coursed through my body as I got ready to sprint, tackle and dive at the opposition.

The whistle blew and the ball came flying at us straight from the Caterham kicker. I caught it and sprinted into the Caterham’s ranks making metres before getting brutally tackled to the ground. We kept advancing forward, getting closer to the try line. In a blur, the ball dropped from our hands, and it was briskly grabbed by a Caterham player who was already dashing to the try line. Despite our efforts to stop him, he had already made it and put the ball down on the try line. We brushed it off, confident we could equal it. Our chance came when I passed the ball to my teammate David Tam, and he broke through the crowd to equalize the score. Caterham weren’t just going to give it up though as they soon scored another try. But we were soon hit with a fresh wave of determination and by the end of the first half we had managed to equal the scores.

Half-time score: Hampton 5- 5 Caterham

This match was turning out to be more than a friendly game as the tension was mounting through both teams. A couple of quick tries from both teams put the score at 8-8 as the minutes left were decreasing. The ball was passed to me by George Corbett and as I accelerated towards the try-line, I knew I had a try in the bag as I dodged the Caterham players and slid past the line. The final whistle blew, and I trudged off the pitch exhausted. I had scored three tries and best of all we had won! This will be a match that I will never forget in my whole time at Hampton.

Try scorers: Alex Pheasant, Rey Jaiswal, David Tam, William Booth, Freddie Fulcher, and Jamie Roblin.

Final score: Hampton 10-8 Caterham
