U14A defeat Lancing College in tense Elgin League affair

By Jago Doherty

Hampton U14A team beat a tough Lancing College side 1-0 at home on Saturday in their fifth game of the Elgin League.

The home side went into the game following a stunning 6-1 win against Howard of Effingham School in the ESFA Cup.

The match started quickly, with both teams having multiple slim chances though neither outfit gained any reward for their labours.

The first major chance occurred just after 20 minutes when Hayden Christian stole the ball off the Lancing shot stopper, before his close-range shot on goal was parried away by the Lancing keeper.

But Christian weas quick to put matters right when he tucked the ball into the back of the net after some pinball action in the away outfit’s penalty box.

After some brilliant passing play from the Hampton team, the home side won a penalty when Paddy Harvey was brought down inside the box.

Midfielder Zain Suttewalla stepped up to take it, deciding to side foot the ball neatly down the middle. Unfortunately the keeper guessed the right way and saved comfortably.

In the final 10 minutes of this tight contest, the away side battled hard to equalise, but could not find a way through Hampton’s back line.

The home side battled to keep a clean sheet right up until the final whistle and due to their efforts the match finished 1-0 to Hampton.
