Hampton and St John’s share points in thrilling contest

By Felix Payne

On Saturday 6th December, the U12s rugby A team went up against a strong St John’s Leatherhead side at home. Hampton didn’t start the match with the intensity that would have liked, and St John’s nearly made some early breakthroughs. Thomas Fulford, under great pressure and on his own try-line, kicked a perfect ball which stopped a try. George Cole also made some great tackles on some big players which halted their numerous other attacks.

However, St John’s continued to put Hampton under pressure and near before halftime, their full-back kicked a ball in behind which led to a try in the corner. Hampton took a deep breath and came out firing in the second half.

Soon after the break, there was a lovely string of passes that made it all the way to Lucas Brand who dodged two tackles and dived to score a superb try. Hampton built their momentum as Felix Payne dived for the line to make it 2-1 to Hampton.

The defence from the home side was brilliant and brought it down to the last play. However, St John’s did not give up and scored a try in the far corner. It was a great game of rugby, and although Hampton was disappointed about the score (2-2), they had played very well.
