U15A ESFA victory – an alternative viewpoint

By Theo Payne

On a surprisingly warm early autumn afternoon on the pristine, storied battleground of F2, the Hampton U15As saw off a tricky Rutlish team, scoring three second-half goals and keeping a deserved clean sheet to start their fourth ESFA campaign with a hard-fought win.

The game started with a bang, with both sides playing early balls over the back lines of the opposition, utilising the pace of their forwards to create a myriad of early chances, all of which fell short of producing the desired result.

However, stellar defending from Josh Don Carolis at left-back and the impassable wall of Thomas Young at centre-back prevented Rutlish from breaking the deadlock, whilst Jasper Townley used his pace and power to trouble the away defence, scorching down the left-hand side at the other end of the pitch.

As half-time neared, fresh legs from Robert Wrigglesworth and Jack Marchant, on the right-wing and at striker respectively, gave Hampton the upper hand, with several crosses delivering the best chances of the game, although none found the back of the net.

The game looked finely poised at half-time, with little separating the two teams.

After a brief recharge, both tactically and physically, the two sides took to the field once more with their ESFA campaigns on the line, acutely aware that in 40 minutes, one team’s campaign would be over.

The home team made it clear that they wouldn’t let it be them, with added impetus after the break causing another surge down the wing from Townley where a cross into the melee allowed Hampton to find the breakthrough.

The ball was cut back to the edge of the box and served up on a plate for Rafi Berry, who calmly placed it beyond the dive of the Rutlish keeper to give his side the lead at a vital time.

Fuelled by the goal, the home side began to dominate the game, with Neil Menon dictating the game from the midfield.

Consecutive probing corners from Hampton ramped up the pressure on the Rutlish defence, before the aforementioned Menon stunned both teams with a 25-yard screamer curling into the top left corner of the net.

But the game was far from done.

A Rutlish free kick on the edge of the penalty area threatened to halve Hampton’s lead, yet it narrowly missed Ollie Scrimshaw’s right-hand post, and provided a wakeup call for the home side.

Soon after, Townley repeated what he had been doing the whole game, bursting through the Rutlish back line, cutting back and this time rifling the ball home to reward his persistence and put the game to bed.

An excellent second-half performance had booked a place in the ESFA second round and offered hope that this could be the first of many ESFA victories for Hampton’s U15As this season.
