Senior footballers enjoy successful pre-season tour to Colchester

By Maxi Grindley

The annual senior pre-season football trip to Colchester took place at the end of the summer holidays.

Around 60 boys gathered at school on Monday morning, excited to play football again after a long summer holiday off.

Before the coaches could be boarded, the players all had to complete their physical tests to ensure they had maintained their fitness over the holiday.

Having arrived at the hotel and put away our bags, there was an intense training session, which was slightly alarming for those of us who hadn’t played in a while.

On Tuesday morning there was a tactical session to prepare us for the matches to follow in the afternoon.

Fuelled by a light lunch beforehand, the U16s recorded a comprehensive 9-1 victory against Heybridge Town , with the U17s and U18s also notching 5-0 and 5-4 victories against Braintree’s respective age groups.

On the next day the boys trained in their respective age groups again to improve cohesion before the final round of games.

These games in the afternoon were a tougher affair as both the U16s and U18s drew 0-0 against Heybridge Town EJA and Cambridge United FC U18 respectively.

However, the U17s did record a second consecutive 5-0 victory, this time against the Cambridge United Shadow Squad.

On Thursday, there was a light and enjoyable training session before the coaches began the trip back to Hampton after a heavenly, football-centric week, perfect to prepare the teams for the season ahead.
